PLEASE READ FIRST!

            Attn:  Customer,

Due to many different factors such as, lift kit size, rim back spacing and axle make and model, it is not possible to design a kit that fits every TJ, XJ and ZJ without slight modification.  We allowed for different options in our kit to accommodate these differences from vehicle to vehicle.  Close attention will need to be paid to all aspects of your steering system before ever taking it out on the road.  If there is any question about your particular setup please contact us immediately before completion of our kit.
Down East Offroad Inc. only warranties the product against defect of materials or craftsmanship.  Improper installation of our product may cause serious injury or death, Down East Offroad Inc. is not responsible or liable for any problems associated with installation or drivability of our product. All welding must be done by a certified welder. Our product is to be installed and maintained by a professional which understands steering and all of its components. If you need to contact us for any reason please call us at (252) 246-9440 or email us at support@downeastoffroad.com.

Step 1.

Park vehicle on level surface. Set the parking brake and chock the rear wheels.

Step 2.

Raise front the front of the vehicle and support the frame with jack stands. Remove the front wheels and set aside.

Step 3.

Remove tie rod and drag link assembly from vehicle and set aside.

Step 4.

Remove brake calipers and pads from both sides of vehicle and set aside. Remove both rotors and set aside for late use.

Step 5.

Remove wheel bearing assembly and knuckle from vehicle. Cut off factory sway bar brackets from the axle housing.

Step 6.

Clean and inspect ball joints, pitman arm and sway bar links for any loose play. Place as needed.

Step 7.

Install new high steer knuckles using the factory ball joints. Torque to factory spec and install cotter pin. Next, install the 6 wheel bearing spacer dowels into both knuckles.  Install wheel bearing spacer.

Step 10.

Install rotors and S-10 calipers, pads and caliper bolts. May need to file the edges off some aftermarket brake line to fit properly.   Don’t forget to bleed the brakes before finishing

Step 11

Remove the factory steering stabilizer mount and both sway bar brackets. DO NOT remove the factory trac bar mount. Very close attention needs to be paid to this step. The factory steering stabilizer mount must be removed for clearance of the tie rod.

Step 12.

***Optional***
You CAN NOT reuse the factory trac bar. To reuse the factory trac bar mount, you must use an adjustable trac bar such as the Rubicon Express Trac Bar.
For Jeeps with 8 inches of lift or more you may want to use the optional trac bar bracket included in our kit. With the coil spring in place, install the bracket so there is clearance between the bracket and spring and also the tie rod. The clearance’s are tight, but installed properly it will not contact the tie rod or the coil spring. We use the SkyJacker Rock Ready trac bar in the top hole of our new trac bar mount. The bottom hole in our mount can also be used for a steering stabilizer or a Rock Ram setup. Install new track bar bracket as shown in the illustration. Some minor trimming of the new brackets may be needed for certain applications.

Step 13.

Install new SkyJacker trac bar or equivalent into new axle side trac bar mount and factory chassis side mount. Adjust as needed OR just use new trac bar bracket for the steering stabilizer.

Step 14

Install new tie rod using the factory tie rod end and adjusting sleeve. Install new drag link from pitman arm to the mounting hole in the end of the tie rod. Typically you can reuse your factory pitman arm with 4-6 inches of lift. After 6 inches and above you may need to reuse a  drop pitman arm. Align wheels with tape measure, get close enough to drive to an alignment shop before highway use.

Step 15.

Install new sway bar brackets onto axle. (We strongly recommend you pay very close attention to this step.)  Depending on width of tire and rim backspacing it may be necessary to install the sway bar brackets inboard of there usual location due to the new increased turning radius of our product.  Failure to check for proper clearance while turning the wheels from lock to lock may result in damage to a tire or sway bar bracket.  See options and pictures as follows. The first four pictures illustrate the optional inboard mounting location, the last four pictures show mounting the new sway bar brackets in the same location as the factory brackets. MAKE SURE THE TIE ROD AND THE NEW SWAY BAR BRACKETS DO NOT CONTACT EACH OTHER THROUGH THE FULL RANGE OF MOTION.

Step 16.

Install steering stabilizer into new track bar bracket and the center hole in the tie rod. We recommend you custom measure for your steering stabilizer to prevent binding at full lock.

Step 17.

Recheck all bolts and make sure all cotter pins are in place. Grease all fittings. Make sure brakes are bleed and brake lines are not rubbing throughout the steering full range of motion. As soon as possible have the vehicle professional aligned.

Notes:

*Depending on how much lift the vehicle has and which trac bar you use it may be necessary to change pitman arms or trac bar to achieve zero bump steer.

*Make sure that the sway bar and sway bar links are in proper geometry and there is no binding through the full range of motion.

*The WARN Hub Conversion Kit will install as normal.
